In this project we were involved in transforming the United States Renal Data System Annual Data Report (ADR) into a dynamic and interactive experience.

Our team worked alongside doctors, bio-statisticians, and data analysts to source data from multiple PDF, CSV, and text file sources, making the data available in digital format for the first time. To enhance the user experience, we created data visualizations that provide a centralized and easy-to-understand overview of the history of the data.

Our software product allows end users of future versions of the ADR to process and display data without the need for further software development. This reusable software product is the result of our collaboration with experts and our commitment to delivering solutions that meet the evolving needs of our clients.

The ADR has been transformed from a static document to a dynamic and interactive experience. The relationship between graphical content and text has been reimagined so that tables and figures take center stage, with descriptive text juxtaposed for easy reference. Figures can be manipulated to display data of most interest, with the reader able to choose among presentations of counts, unadjusted rates, or adjusted rates. In other cases, readers can choose to display data stratified by patient characteristics or within subgroups of interest with automatic rescaling of axes as necessary for optimal viewing. Readers can also download figures in their original form or in the customized form they have created.

We are proud to have been part of this transformation and to have delivered a valuable product that supports and enhances the core function of the ADR – to describe the epidemiology of kidney disease in the U.S. in support of public health, research, and policy initiatives to improve the care of individuals with acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, and end-stage renal disease.
